Deus Ex Machina 2 is the sequel to the anicent retro game people barely seen or heard Deus Ex Machina for the XZ Spectrum and C64 only to come out as one of the first games to use it's audio to be fused with the gameplay which was extremely rare and unheard of at the time. The games' lead character is an human looking character who is considered a defect which the player loosey controls. The game is very very VERY linear! So linear that it feels almost pointless playing the game. What saves the game are the varities of levels which all are different in terms of how they look with the lead character quickly 'growing up' as the game presents the character aging process (Not in real time of course, pre-made for show). The game forces itself as soon as you boot the same. Very linear game, once your in, no way out. No save states, save points, reloads, whatever. Just a game which acts like a presentive jukebox. Overpriced? I don't know! Alot of work did go into the games graphics, models, lighting and gameplay but that's really about it.. Having played the original Deus Ex Machina on the Commodore 64 when it was released back in 1984. Playing Machina 2 was an absolute joy to play, Of course its not really a game but a fantastic experience of the seven ages of man from a shakespear play. For some this will be very hard to understand as its considered more so an art game than a real game. I enjoyed every minute of it and can only suggest that people when they play it keep an open mind.. Deus Ex Machina 2 is the sequel to a game made back in the 1980's. It's predecessor being made for the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. The original was a breakthrough as it added realistic audio to a game via an audio tape, which had to be played at the right moment. This game, if you can call it that, is a masterpiece, an artwork. Not necessarily a game, but an inlook into birth, life, love, hatred, and death. It's a game series with cult status. A game that I grew up with as a parent loved the original.I would recommend that you try this game out if you have a couple extra quid to spare, but I would recommend the original first. Some good ZX Spectrum emulators still are out there.A masterpiece.. It was not what i was expecting. I buy games to have some sort of fun and choice about what happens in the game, but in this 'game' you can beat the levels by just sitting there. it's more like a compilation of random episodes, and completely not atmospheric and somewhat strange music. If you are trying to test your endurance of a game, this would be it. the levels are repetitive and bland. i would not recommend it though, with many other better games out there.. More of an interactive music video/story than a game, telling the tale of living through life.Having played this just minutes after playing the original, I can say that it feels a lot like a when a musician releases a remix album. Some of the remixes will be good, some of them will be bad, but none of them will really manage to capture the spirit of the original tracks. That in mind, both DEM games are very heavily reliant on their music, and the tracks in 2 happen to be a lot of remixes from the original, and they fit the above description to a tee, with more of the remixes being good than bad. Though on the other hand, most of the tracks original to this title are pretty grating if not outright painful to listen to.While 2 is basically a modern remake of the original, it unfortunatly cuts out or moves around the majority of the story bits, which really hurts it as a standalone title as what small story there was in the original was pretty cool and they had come up with some really neat lyrics around it.While I did enjoy this game, I enjoyed it in the context of how it was nice seeing a modern retelling of the original 30+ year old game, and it sadly doesn't stand up very well without that context. I'd make this a neutral review if steam would just add the option already, as if you've played the original it's a cool experience. I very strongly recommend playing the original game, which you can find for about the same price as this one on Indiegamestand (maybe other places too, I've yet to check). If you end up liking it, consider also giving this one a shot.. this is the best game i have played since 1970 its so amazing you wont even belive it i would give it a 11 / 10. No drugs needed. Basically a hour long music video for multiple songs, some are decent, some are very good and 2 i found were pretty♥♥♥♥♥♥ Gameplay pretty much non existent, as much as Controls i would even say. Mistakes don't matter at all, so you won't lose.Don't expect here a game at all, especially for that price tag this is pure robbery. Also if this thing crashes (which happened to me twice) you have to start all over again, so have fun.. This Feels more like a bad Britney Spears video compilation than a actual game.1/10: Icarus has fallen and you will feel like a dead Rat when you finish this game. I've got nothing against Games as Art. I just require one thing - either be a good game, or good art (or Ideally, both). This is neither. Navigate a naked man (or hermaphrodite, for a few sections) through poorly controlled endless runner sequences while your 'score' gets docked for no apparent reason, while some poorly modernized interpretation of Shakespeare is spouted at you. No explanations, barely any control, no real gameplay. I will give it this - the music, while wildly divergent in styles, is all of good to excellent quality. But if you like it, do yourself a favor and just find the album, because it will never be cleansed of the stain that is this 'game' if you experience it here first. Maybe I just don't get what it was going for, or maybe it really is that horrible. At about an hour (that must be played straight through - if you leave, you'll have to start over, no matter that 'resume' option on the menu screen), there's not much here, but if you play through it, you'll be thankful that there's only an hour of the suffering. Do yourself a favor and steer far far away.
